May 2011
The International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences (ICAS) Congress takes place every alternate year and is a forum for the international aeronautical community to network and present papers on a wide range of technologies. In the alternate years the ICAS Programme Committee, made up of national representatives of member societies and subject experts, meets to plan the following event and select, referee and represent papers for the conference. John Monk attends on behalf of both the Aeronautical Society of South Africa as the member society and the CSIR as an affiliate member. The CSIR currently funds the AeSSA annual ICAS membership fees as part of its corporate partnership.
The 2010 ICAS congress was one of the more successful in recent history with over 700 registered participants excluding accompanying persons. The congress was held in Nice, France over the week of 19th to the 24th September 2010 hosted by Association Aeronautique et Astronautique de France (3AF). The welcoming speech was presented by the French Minister of Industry (and interestingly the Nice City Mayor) Mr Christian Estrosi who welcomed the participants.
The call for papers attracted over 720 submissions from around 40 countries from which about 440 papers were presented orally in 11 parallel session tracks together with a good number of poster presentations.
A number of very high quality invited General Lectures were also presented:
The Daniel & Florence Guggenheim Memorial Lecture was presented by M. Laroche, Safran, France on the topic “Improving Engine Development Through Global Modeling”
The ACARE (Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe) was represented by its co-chairmen Mr François Quentin and Prof. Joachim Szodruch, who jointly presented the von Karman Award lecture and were awarded the von Karman Award for International Cooperation in Aeronautics.
At the congress Dr. Detlef Müller-Wiesner from Germany was elected as ICAS president for 2011-2012 succeeding Prof. Ian Poll from the UK. It was also announced that Mr. Anders Gustafsson, who had been the ICAS Executive Secretary for the past eight years, would step down at the end of 2010 to be succeeded by Mr. Axel Probst from Germany.
For those interested the ICAS 2010 proceedings are available on a CD Rom containing 519 full papers and can be purchased (120 EUR including postage) from the ICAS Secretariat This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
