The Aeronautical Society of South Africa presented its 2019 Annual Conference in Pretoria at the CSIR International Convention Centre. The three-day event took place from 16 to 18 October 2019.
The theme of the conference was African Aerospace: Innovation & Passion. To thrive in the aerospace industry today, one cannot be mediocre. Competing on the world stage requires innovative, world-leading components, technologies, aircraft and systems. Passion is what helps one to stay the course for development in aerospace.

Organisers
Marié Botha, President of the AeSSA, headed the Organising Committee of the AeSSA 2019 Annual Conference.
She was supported by Dr Glen Snedden, Past President and Honorary Secretary, who led the Technical Committee, together with several members of Council and AeSSA members.
Liza Barnard, Honorary Secretary, worked with a team of service providers in planning and executed all aspects of the event.
Speakers
Keynote speakers for the AeSSA’s 2019 Annual Conference have been confirmed. They are Ricardo Traven, Chief Test Pilot – Boeing Charleston: 787 Dreamliner Program, and Billie Flynn, Lockheed Martin: F-35 Lightning II Test Pilot. Marié Botha, President of the AeSSA, says, “We are delighted to welcome these two test pilots to our event in October 2019 and are looking forward to their presentations.”
Major Nandi Zama of the SANDF is an invited speaker at the event. Her military aviation career has seen her fly across many nations, including conflict countries such as the DRC and South Sudan. She led the C130 formation during the 2019 Presidential Inauguration in May 2019. Botha says, “Her contribution to our event will be invaluable.”
Invited speaker Captain Martin Louw of Comair is no stranger to the AeSSA Annual Conferences. Botha confirms, “We look forward to his contribution this year.”
A panel discussion on the topic, Automation – Unintended Consequences on Pilot Handling Skills and Aviation Safety will be facilitated by Maj. Gen. Des Barker SAAF Rtd. Panel members are Billie Flynn, Lockheed Martin; Captain Scully Levin, Mango; Captain Martin Louw, Comair; Captain Stefan Poprawa, SAA; Ricardo Traven, Boeing Charleston; and Captain Glen Warden, Comair.
Young Professionals Forum
The Young Professionals Networking Workshop took place on 15 October 2019 at Lanseria Airport, just before the AeSSA 2019 Annual Conference. This annual event is an initiative of the AeSSA with support from the Aerospace Industry Support Initiative. Read about this YP Workshop at Lanseria: new venue, new ideas.
